How A Meal Kit Delivery Business Ships Seasonally
At PeriWrap, we work with clients from a diverse range of industries to develop custom packaging that fits each business’ unique needs. In the following case study, we share how we helped a frozen meal kit delivery business save on shipping costs while protecting their meals in transit. Read on to discover how seasonal packaging profiles could be your chef’s kiss.
When it comes to shipping meal kits, there are several key considerations for business owners. Because of tight margins, frequent shipments and food safety, meal kit business owners look for packaging that is sustainable, affordable and effective. The client whose story we're sharing today ships frozen healthy meal kits. When we first connected, he was already using sustainable liners. However, he was looking to further save on costs while increasing thermal performance, and that’s where we stepped in.
While our product cost roughly the same as the original liner this client was using, and both options were sustainable, he was paying 6x the cost of the product in freight charges. Since we have manufacturing plants across the country, we’re able to source facilities closest to each customer to help them save on freight as well as environmental impact. This allowed us to reduce the landed cost for the item while still providing a sustainable product for our customer. We identified one of our facilities, which is three hours away from this customer’s shipping plant and provided full truckload freight at roughly one sixth of the price of what he had been paying with our competitor.
Another major consideration for meal kit delivery business owners is temperature. Anyone shipping perishables knows the difficulty of keeping items frozen in the hottest summer months, as well as when shipping year-round to warmer locations like Arizona and Florida. Generally, winter shipping requires a 1:1 ratio with ice and the weight of the goods being shipped, while summer shipping requires a 1:1.2 ratio. Because our client was concerned about the safety of his shipments in hotter months, we recommended he create seasonal shipping profiles to maximize both cost-efficiency and performance. One of our dedicated Sales Consultants worked one-on-one with this client to map out their seasonal profiles. For spring, winter and fall shipments they use our CorrCool Plus Liners, which are made from 95% post-industrial content. They use our PolyCool Plus Liners for their summer profile as well as year-round shipments to hotter states. Our PolyCool Plus Liners can have their density adjusted based on environmental temperatures.
Our diverse selection of sustainable insulation and refrigerant solutions allowed this client to build out seasonal shipping profiles with varying levels of thermal performance while remaining cost competitive. While this client’s summer shipping profile is a little more expensive than his winter profile, he's satisfied because he now has the confidence his shipments are safe throughout the summer months. And because he's saving money on freight, our solution benefits him all around.
