How an Aquatics Company Shucked Styrofoam
At PeriWrap, we work with clients from a diverse range of industries to develop custom packaging that fits each business’ unique needs. In the following case study, we share how we helped a customer in the aquatics industry transition away from styrofoam while still maintaining ambient temperatures in transit.
When it comes to cold chain shipping, the aquatics industry is unique. Rather than keeping a product frozen or extremely cold, packages containing aquatic goods (like live shrimp) need to maintain ambient temperatures throughout transit. The sweet spot for these temperatures typically falls in the range of 68°F to 77°F, which can be difficult to control when moving through multiple states and climates. Until recently, styrofoam has been the insulation of choice amongst many businesses in the aquatics industry for its ability to maintain these specific temperatures. However, styrofoam is extremely harmful to the environment and is now officially banned in multiple states. Knowing this, we asked this customer if they were interested in maintaining those same ambient temperatures with a more sustainable solution. The answer was a resounding yes.
Previous to working with us, this customer was using styrofoam and PCM packs, or phase change material packs, to maintain ambient temperature within their boxes. We found we were able to achieve the same result with a combination of our Periliner, which is a paper-based liner*, and our PCM packs.
We came to this solution after extensive testing in collaboration with the client. We had initially begun testing with our two-ply PeriLiner. However, this client felt it wasn’t sufficient for their requirements. We were able to offer a three-ply PeriLiner, which passed temperature testing, stayed within budget and accomplished the task at hand.
Our new solution performed the same as styrofoam while saving on storage space (styrofoam coolers are notoriously bulky) and being cost-effective. On top of these benefits, switching to sustainable liners also allowed this client to extend their brand through custom packaging. We worked with them to customize the outer master shipping box with their logo and brand colors. Whereas before their shipments arrived in a standard nondescript box from the foam cooler manufacturer, their products now arrived in a beautifully branded, cohesive box, enhancing the customer experience. Their customers were also happy that the packages were more sustainable, creating a win-win all around.

*It’s worth noting here that though this client opted for a paper-based product, we also offer sustainable liners made from plastic water bottles (up to 85% post-consumer content), which are also curbside recycle #1.
