How a Compound Pharmacy Developed a Cure-All Packaging Solution
At PeriWrap, we work with clients from a diverse range of industries to develop custom packaging that fits each business’ unique needs. In the following case study, we share how we helped a compound pharmacy remedy their patients’ call for greener packaging while saving on storage space in the process.
Now more than ever, consumers are demanding businesses go green. It’s not uncommon for consumers to switch loyalty to brands that prioritize sustainability, which is why business owners shouldn’t ignore these calls for accountability. At PeriWrap, we frequently work with businesses in these scenarios and we help them develop greener packaging solutions that still meet their specific shipping requirements.
One such customer is from the pharmaceutical industry. One of the main reasons they wanted to transition to sustainable liners is that their customers, particularly patients on subscription deliveries, did not like receiving foam coolers because of the amount of waste generated. This compound pharmacy needed a curbside recyclable option that would reduce their carbon footprint and appease customers.
Our first step was to listen and understand why they were using foam coolers in the first place. We learned that their packages often require either ambient or refrigerated temperatures, and they believed Styrofoam was the only way to maintain those temperatures in transit. We introduced them to a paper-based, curbside recyclable liner in combination with our PCM Packs, which together achieved the same effect as the foam coolers.
There are many reasons to dislike Styrofoam. In addition to being harmful to the environment (and banned in multiple states), Styrofoam coolers are also excessively bulky. This compound pharmacy operates out of a storefront, meaning their storage space is limited. The foam coolers they were using took up unnecessary space, whereas the two-piece paper liner ships and stores flat, making it much more compact.
They use a made-to-order liner which allows them to get the exact size they need. Due to space requirements and overall volume, they get timed deliveries in small quantities monthly. They've been using this solution for three years now. It keeps their products safe in transit and their customers happy.
